I haven't blogged in a bit because I didn't really have much to report... other than feeling the weirdest pains (strange lower back throbs, hip pain, mild nausea), I have been doing OK. The worst part of this week was taking my car in for $1900 of repairs and starting to get my medical bills which have surpassed $1,000 already.
I guess for those new to cancer, I can report a few strange things going on. I have little appetite because my stomach mostly always feels icky. I still eat but stuff tastes funny. Cherries are sour and acidic to me, eggs taste horrible, I have no appetite for meat or fish.. there just isn't a lot of fun in eating right now. I am starting to develop sensitive spots in my mouth where they sting if I eat certain foods and when I brush. But that's really about it.
I saw the Oncologist today and got my Herceptin by IV. He commented that I still had my hair... I guess that means it will be falling out soon. I just got the hats that I ordered in today, so I should be ready..ish. When I went to the treatment center, the nurse was slightly horrified when I told her I went for a 30 mile bike ride last Saturday. She told me to give it a rest and not exercise for a month. A month! I'll gain like 5 lbs if I don't exercise for a month.
Yes Avi, I know, I should listen ;-) I'll try exercise in much shorter and less intense bits for now...

The wonders of your insurance's annual cap will appear soon. Bizarrely, this is one of the few good things about the whole process -- once you hit the cap, everything you want (medically speaking) is essentially free for the rest of the year.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget -- mileage is reimburseable in your FSA plan, too. Every dollar helps!
$1900 for car repairs!! You must have been outraged...cars a ripoff.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will post pics if you do lose your hair - I'm sure you'll still look great.
Mike, you kill me... but yes, I do plan posting pics of my bald head when i start to shed and Randy shaves it off.
ReplyDeleteWish I could be there for you. Take good care of yourself and coming from someone who gained 60 pounds while on prednisone and losing it after I went off the drug and now starting that losing weight battle again thanks to my thyroid surgery, it will come off. I hope you can take strength from your mom and my mom both woman who fought this disease with dignity and independence. Love you and your are always in my thought and prayers, cousin Maxine
ReplyDeleteHey Maureen, I know what you mean about not wanting to give up the exercise, but dont worry about the weight! I was off for 2 weeks with the flu, gained weight, but it only took me a week to get rid of it. Besides, a bit of weight I am sure will help you get through this. Thats brutal about the car! They are such money pits.
ReplyDeleteYou won't gain weight if your appetite is down. Just do whatever exercise makes you feel good, you deserve it.
ReplyDeleteThe nurse would probably have been horrified even if you weren't doing chemo. The other day, a person in my building gasped when I told her I rode the bike 5 miles to work. I spoke to Jill and she said that she'd be happy to do the dirty deed gratis if you were so inclined.
ReplyDeletei'm curious, which hat did you end up buying? let's get together when i come back next weekend.
ReplyDeletethis might sound horrifying, but maybe try eating some tofu. you well at least get some protein in your system. it's bland so you won't be missing much flavor, unless of course you season it. it sounds like you might be a vegan for awhile! i have to admit i was pretty surprised to learn that you went on a 30 mile ride after your first chemo. session! i wouldn't worry about the weight Mo, besides, it sounds like you are not eating much anyways. let your body rest, no need to push yourself. maybe some hiking or light swimming, or shorter bike rides. let me know if you are up some hiking or short bike rides...i'm a horrible swimmer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update, Mo. You will look great no matter what. You should talk to Ali about some of the money stuff -- he has a pretty good handle on how to best plan to maximize whatever help the government can give you, tax-wise. Thinking of you...

Ooooh Tofu recipe, I've some great ones. Tofu with eggplant, tofu with fennel, tofu with blue cheese Mmmmm. Snarf! Snarf! Yiccup!
ReplyDeletehope your weekend is good.
ReplyDeletelet me know how you feel.
Love Avi
trying again to use the blog page.
Another suggestion for food is milkshakes, or fruitshakes, you can get tofu or an egg in there without even knowing. Plus it takes the hassle out of chewing. (Ok, I get lazy sometimes) aside from cleaning out the blender, they're a dream.

Auntie Nini,
ReplyDeleteMommy says you are silly to worry about gaining weight when you can't seem to eat. She says stop worrying. But I know about worrying about the poundage. Two weeks ago (when I was born, just to remind you) I came out of mommy's tummy a little underweight for my gestation period. The doctors had mom all freakin out, but I'm almost back to my birth weight, if the bathroom scale isn't off or broken.
I'll know for sure tomorrow.
When we skyped this weekend (and we will be sorry to see the Flock of Seagall hair go away), we were quite shocked you still have big biking plans. Now, I can't ride a bike yet ... give me a couple of years ... but mommy says ... only do easy stuff, no mountain terrain or up a mountain, down a mountain rides. Mommy says you can also swim in your pool, but I wouldn't know because I haven't seen it yet.
Just to let you know Auntie Nini, I get cuter every day. Mommy says so.
Love you,
Chloe
